About the speakers

Chair Peter Ride is Principal Research Fellow in Visual Culture, University of Westminster. Through commissioning and producing new work, he is addressing the way that artists can use digital technology, and how the roles of curators and producers of new media are changing as digital arts projects are developed out of collaborative research between industry and academic sectors. Ride is also Artistic Director of DA2, Digital Arts Development Agency, an organisation that develops commissions, artist residencies and curatorial training schemes.

Luke Jerram designs artworks that deliver an experience to unusual perceptual territories. His Sky Orchestra, using surround sound played from hot air balloons, launched the Sydney Festival in January 2007, and was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company over Stratford-upon-Avon to mark its Complete Works Festival in June 2006. As well as the Clark Bursary, he has previously been awarded a NESTA fellowship and completed an AHRC Arts and Science Fellowship at UWE.

Mark Lythgoe is a neuroscientist and Director of the Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging, UCL. Mark is also Director of the Cheltenham Science Festival, one of the largest science festivals in the world. Lythgoe has recently explored the split between the two cultures in a two-part series The New Two Cultures for BBC Radio 4. For 2009, Mark is developing a five part series for BBC Radio 4 on images that changed the world.

Chris Alford is a Reader in Applied Psychology, University of the West of England. He was a founding member of the British Sleep Society and has worked as a legal adviser and expert witness for sleep, drugs and driving related cases. He collaborates with Jeni Parker as part of the UWE Dream Research Group, and with Bristol based artists Luke Jerram and Dan Jones for sleep performance events.
