Based on a series of murders that took place between October and November of 1968, this is the tale of a 19-year-old Nagayama Norio (or Yamada Michio in the film) who used a stolen gun from the US troops at Yokosuka and shot four people at different locations. Nagayama was arrested in April 1969 and executed almost three decades later, in August 1997. The great Shindo Kaneto made this film two years after the incident, after extensive interviews with the murderer's mother, family, teacher and friends, and compiled a fascinating picture of this young man's life and his descent into crime.
