Speakeasy

Speakeasy events aim to explore aspects of artists' working process in an informal and interactive environment.

9 May 2009, Lower Gallery and Theatre

Speakeasy, an ongoing project initiated by artist Terry Smith, is an informal experiment in the public presentation of artists' work that has explored areas including dance and movement as well as more conventional media. Bucking the conventions of the 'artist's talk', Speakeasy events aim to explore aspects of artists' working process in an informal and interactive environment. This event entitled Word/Play, held throughout the ICA on 9 May 2009, was an investigation into the spoken word as raw material, and included the screening of a film by David Austen; the presentation of video works by Jordan Baseman, Paul Coldwell, Roi Vaara and Gun Holmström; a telephone work by Gayle Chong Kwan located in the ICA cafe; a workshop by Islington Mill Arts Academy; and performances by Jefford Horrigan and the String.
