Falke Pisano’s diagrammatic works expose a loop, in which shifting abstract sculptural forms are conceived directly in relation to written and spoken language, implying an ongoing and morphing production of meaning.
The artist’s print for the ICA refers to a recent work which formed part of a lecture, Figures of Speech, and of Figures of Speech (diagrammed), which includes a group of wall sculptures which act as symbolic representations of the ‘positions’ described in the lecture. Pisano’s edition for the ICA illustrates one of these positions, and the artist sees the image as a symbol of an art object that incorporates an awareness of its construction (the red stripes) and of its own past (the white squares).
Falke Pisano lives and works in Amsterdam. Projects this year include the Venice Biennale and a solo exhibition at Kunstverein, Graz. The artist will feature in the forthcoming ICA exhibition For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there (3rd December 2009 – 31st January 2010).
