The ICA is proud to announce a new print by Matt Mullican, made by the artist to accompany the ICA exhibition For the blind man… (3 December 2009 - 31 Jaunuary 2010). For over three decades Mullican has created a complex body of work which deals with systems of cognition, knowledge and signification, and at the ICA the artist is represented by an extraordinary installation featuring an array of drawings and other works on paper made since the 1970s.
One feature within Mullican’s work are performances and drawings made while under hypnosis, many of which refer to That Person, a figure who emerges during the hypnotic trance. Over the years certain things have become established about That Person, one of which is that he likes coffee (he wants to wake up). Mullican’s print for the ICA, entitled I love I love coffee, refers to That Person’s love of the brand of coffee named ‘i love coffee’.
Matt Mullican was born in 1951 in Santa Monica, California and currently lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Ludwig Museum, Cologne, and in 2011 the artist will be the subject of an exhibition at Haus der Kunst, Munich.
