Live Weekends: Notation and Interpretation
A mini-season with a dual focus on composed work and the permutations of music performance. Notation and Interpretation will also showcase the aesthetic appeal of the musical score and current cross-pollination at work in the fields of contemporary classical and electronic practice. John Cage, in his book Notations alluded to the intrigue of the score by publishing single pages of works sent to him by composers in 1969. With a nod to this visual enchantment, this Live Weekend will present visual stimuli, participatory workshops, debate, film work and music informed by the composed. Larry Goves & Mira Calix will premiere their self-penned composition Exchange and Return (black edition) and a roll-call of dynamic performers as Kammer Klang will present works by Earle Brown, John Cage and Morton Feldman amongst others. Elsewhere, Dirty Electronics will host immersive workshops in the ICA gallery providing visitors with the opportunity to build and play a giant modular synthesizer. All events, with the exception of Thursday’s talk, are free but may require booking via the box office due to limited availability.
Notation and Interpreation is curated by Will Dutta (Chimera Productions), Lucy Railton (Kammer Klang) and Joana Seguro (Lumin/Faster than Sound) with assistance from Jamie Eastman, Head of Live Programme at the ICA.
