A Fragile Existence - A History of Women's Film and Video Distribution in Fragments

1 February 2012

£12 / £10 Concessions / £8 ICA Members / £5 ICA Student Members

During the second half of the 20th Century, women's film and video distributors were set up both in the USA and Europe to improve the circulation and awareness of women's film nationally and internationally. As institutions such as Circles, Women Make Movies, Cinenova, and the Women's Independent Film Exchange emerged, so too did an active conversation about the roles and responsibilities that they should fulfill.

Through archival correspondence, notes and documents from crucial points in the history of these institutions, this talk constructs a conversation in fragments through the voices of its participants revealing decisive accounts from the founding moments, struggles and conflicts in their continued fight for existence and economic independence.

This will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Felicity Sparrow, freelance curator and researcher and founder of Circles Distribution, Julia Knight Professor of Moving Image at the University of Sunderland, writer and curator Elinor Cleghorn, and Marina Vishmidt and Irene Revell from Cinenova.

At the end of the session, there will be a screening of Lis Rhodes' 1982 film, Pictures on Pink Paper.
