Shere Hite: Sexual purity and the new global terrorism

Cultural historian Hite places the misunderstanding of the female body at the centre of global instability.

Recorded live at the ICA on 3 May 2006

The internationally respected cultural historian and gender expert argues that much of today's instability in global politics is due to a misunderstanding of the female body.

Themes of female virginity and purity are increasingly popular in both West and East. Furthermore, much of today's instability in global politics is due to a misunderstanding of the female body and an attempt to control female sexuality or women’s reproduction. What does all this represent, and how can we move beyond it?

Hite presented a short lecture, and was interviewed by Joan Smith, author of the books Moralities and Misogynies.
