Conceptual artist Seth Kim-Cohen presents 68SFTD, a 68-minute live minimalist performance based on Sympathy for the Devil.
The Stones' classic is played by members of PJ Harvey, Brand New Heavies, Number One Cup, Robert Plant's band, Beth Orton's band, Mira Calix's band, the Fire Show, and Sarah Nicolls.
During the 68 minutes, memories of 1968 - the Prague Spring, Paris in May, the Chicago Seven protests at the Democratic National Convention, the My Lai Massacre, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy - are evoked. Ideas of progress, resolution and authority are replaced by repetition, extreme duration and the downplaying of virtuosity, through the minimalism of Philip Glass and Steve Reich, the circularity of Can and the Velvet Underground, the extended grooves of James Brown and Miles Davis.
Performers:
Seth Kim-Cohen (Number One Cup, The Fire Show, Unst)
John Parish (PJ Harvey, Giant Sand, Eels)
Billy Fuller (Robert Plant)
Lascelles Gordon (Brand New Heavies, Beth Orton)
Drew Morgan (Ken Vandermark, Roundstone, Unst)
Sarah Nicolls (Mira Calix)
Ross Parfitt (The Hunter Gracchus)
Rob Mullender (Eidetic Band, Unst)
Paul Chauncy (Donglefarm, Unst)
Like a demon accountant calculating the tenor of the times, Sympathy for the Devil tallies the spirit of 1968.
