Beth Kurkjian has performed her work in NYC at venues such as PS 122, Dixon Place, La Mama, Galapagos, and the Ontological Theatre. Kurkjian performed her solo Age Less at The Accidental Festival at the ICA Theatre in London last summer, and this spring at the SHUNT Lounge London Bridge and at the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries in Wales. She has performed in many ensemble projects by NYC-based artists such as Ken Nintzel, Juliana Francis, Aaron Landsman, Johanna S. Meyer, and Noemi Lafrance.
Kurkjian is a Performance Studies PhD candidate at NYU, where she is Lecturer in Expository Writing. This new show sees her portray Sylvie Or Marie, a character from a story written by Ben Greenman. She offers audiences a complicated portrait of this imaginary woman, who might recall women we adore and/or disregard in real life. This theatrical installation work mixes portions of text, choreography, and video images. Kurkjian has hand-crocheted inter-locking costumes and screens for the projections.
