Can Art Make Us Happy?

14 January 2009

£10 / £9 Concessions / £8 ICA Members.

Can art provide a panacea in economic and social gloom? Can art provide the imaginative space needed to make us feel better? Or are expectations of the artist too high? Are artists better placed to reveal the darker side of life: the taboos and social ills?

Speakers: artists Zoë Walker and Michael Pinsky of Panacea, a collaborative project exploring the notion of the artwork as social cure-all; Nicolas Bourriaud, curator, Tate Triennial; Siân Ede, deputy director, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; Jane Wernick, editor, Building Happiness: Architecture to Make You Smile. Chair: Claire Doherty, curator and writer.

This talk coincides with the launch of the Panacea publication and participating artists' monographs.
