A real gem of a documentary that follows a Brighton-based punk group dealing with all the attendant pressure, excitement and conflict of ego that comes with being part of a band. Familiar stuff up to a point perhaps, but Heavy Load are made up of musicians with and without learning disabilities, so to operate and survive as a unit they must negotiate between the institutional timetable of day centres, work placements and social workers and the supposed freedom of rehearsal rooms, studios and gigs. Shot over the course of two years, this film is an intimate, funny and affecting portrait of four men figuring out how to work with the system and each another to achieve their goal - a life of punk-rock independence and happiness.
There will be a Q&A, bar event and live show, following the 6.30pm screening on Wednesday 1 October.
There will be a Q&A with producer Jonny Persey, director Jerry Rothwell and a member of the band (to be confirmed) on Sunday 5 October after the the 7:45pm screening.
Dir Jerry Rothwell, UK 2008, 91 mins, Cert 12A
