"Bio Matters" workshop

Sunday 14 September, 2pm

This workshop explores the sustainable principles behind the "Suicidal Textiles" collection, inspired by the biological phenomonon of Programmed Cell Death, in which some of our cells effectively commit suicide in order to allow others to develop. The workshop will explore issues of biodegradability and textiles, introducing participants to plant fibres such as nettle, hemp, jute and abaca, as well as to new biopolymer fibres made from corn, milk and soya beans. The second part of the workshop will introduce best practice in composting in St James's Park allotment. Each participant will be given hands-out and a sample kit of various fibres.

Led by Carole Collet in collaboration with St James's Park.

This workshop lasts and hour, and takes place partly in St James's Park: please be prepared for inclement weather. Children under sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.

Solar Jam Workshop with Loop.pH

Monday 15 September, 2pm.

The Solar Jam Workshop blurs the distinction between kitchens and laboratories to make you more familiar with a scientific heritage that connects traditional crafts to current research practices. Experiment with the potential of berries, onions and citrus leaves to make cutting edge solar cells, jam and patterned textiles. Substances have skillfully been extracted from plants for thousands of years for medicinal, nutritional and energy needs. How can we turn our kitchens, homes and cities into community labs of researchers and non-experts sharing knowledge and experience?

This workshop lasts three hours and takes place in the ICA Theatre. It is open to anyone over 18.
