Sean Snyder: Index is the first institutional solo exhibition in the UK by the American artist, and includes a selection of his video and photographic projects from the last five years. Snyder's work demonstrates the continuous translation and re-interpretation of images and ideas in the era of globalization, and recent pieces have explored the territory of war reporting and propaganda, including the role of high-tech imaging in contemporary conflict. Works on show include Casio, Seiko, Sheraton, Toyota, Mars (2004-05), a video which includes appropriated commercial and war footage, and which explores the operation of journalistic conventions and consumer branding in the context of the Iraq War.
The exhibition takes its title from a major new project by the artist, named Index. In 2008 Snyder began the process of digitizing the archives that he has accumulated while creating projects over more than ten years, so that all the data associated with his production could fit in a single, searchable digital index. This project will allow his physical archive to effectively dematerialize, and his digital archive - and the research it contains - to become widely accessible. This project will manifest itself as a display in the ICA's galleries, and will also take the form of a website and a publication (the latter will function as the exhibition's catalogue).
Born in Virginia Beach, USA in 1972, Sean Snyder lives and works in Kyiv and Tokyo.
