The Experiment: June 2008

Ghostpunk, spoken dreams, heretics and priests, and tape-gore audio essays: The Experiment explores further annals of innovative music in June.

The Experiment: exploring the annals of innovative music, steering enticing and uncharted audio seas in search of sounds that you will not hear everyday!

This month we have an occult mixture of Ghostpunk, spoken dreams, the musical investigations of heretics and priests, and tape-gore audio essays. It's all here to celebrate a year of the ICA's experimental music podcast.

Ever had a vivid dream? We have one documented here: the bizzare and terrifying recordings of somniloquist Dion McGregor which have been put out on John Zorn's Tzadik Label.

We also have the equally dreamlike sounds of Blank Dogs and Factums - watery dubbed vocals and garbled warped tape synths. Both these artists are on the New York Label Sacred Bones, which we are showcasing this month.

Meandering in the warm and toxic, decaying world of tape we also have the solo artist Nonhorse. Following the DIY underground noise tradition - Nonhorse releases most of his material on tape. Here we have a snippet from a 30 minute piece.

Bob Trimble is a lost gem from late seventies pyschedelia. His gender-defying vocals and lush ornamentation combine to present a unqiue vision. Trimble's re-discovered work has been now released on Secretly Canadian.

Inspired by the writings of Marguerite Porete, a 13th century French mystic, a new offering by collaborators Jozef van Wissem and James Blackshaw is a treasure of minimal, meaningful music.

Finally, we have another Tzadik label artist. Seattle-based composer Eyvind Kang plays lush, reflective sounds, both orchestrally dense and also minimal and light - simply beautiful.

Keep listening!
