The Independent Alliance of Publishers in partnership with the ICA present a one day festival to celebrate and explore independence in all its many guises, focusing on the core values of independence, integrity and innovation.
In the current cultural environment it seems that we are in danger of neglecting the power of individual creativity, a strength that brings such diversity and excitement to our lives. Join us for an ambitious day of discussion, debate and entertainment delivered by invited special guests from across our independent arts industries, publishing, theatre, film, art and music.

Industry and Independence

What constitutes being 'independent'? And what is the future for independent business? A high profile panel debates the art of being independent in the 21st Century. The panel discussion is chaired by Justin Webb (BBC), and features Stephen Page (Faber CEO), Gregor Muir (ICA Director ), Laurence Bell (Domino Records Founder) and M T Rainey (Think Ltd Chairman).

A high profile panel debate on how the current economic climate is affecting publishing, the arts and media industries. The panel discussion is chaired by James Ashton (City Editor, London Evening Standard), and features Andrew Franklin (Profile Founder & MD), Amber Rudd MP and John Lanchester (Faber Author).
5pm - 6 pm
What are the prospects for a first-time writer? What is the key to discovering new talent and what role does the independent sector play in nurturing the stars of tomorrow? Writers and editors talk about their publishing experiences, with a panel discussion followed by a Q&A chaired by Erica Wagner (The Times Literary Editor), featuring Amy Sackville (Granta Author), Bea Hitchman (Profile/Serpent's Tail Author), Patrick Flanery (Atlantic Author), Ted Hodgkinson (Online Editor Granta), and Ravi Mirchandani (Atlantic Books Publishing Director).

In the age of self-publishing what role can the literary magazine play in cementing the reputation of new writers? What is the relationship between experimental writing and publishing practices?
