13 Presidents: Election Night Special

8 Nov 2016

On the night of the US Presidential election, this event will celebrate the launch of Marisa J. Futernick’s publication 13 Presidents. The event will include readings by Futernick, and a discussion with Ghislaine Leung and Khloe Sjogren-Cath on ideas of failure and absurdity in relation to the American dream, society’s fascination with authority figures, and the ways in which their identities are constructed. The speakers will consider fiction as a strategy across writing, curating and contemporary art.

13 Presidents is an artist’s book that combines photographs from Futernick’s journey across America to visit all thirteen of the nation’s Presidential libraries with a suite of short stories. Mixing fact and fiction, each President from Herbert Hoover to George W. Bush is a protagonist in this collection of unexpected portraits. The photographs, shot on analogue film, depict the everyday details of the towns that these men are from, including the homes where they were born, and their final resting places. 13 Presidents weaves together personal narrative with wider cultural observation, forming a vision of America that is both invented and true.
