The acclaimed music film documentary Acoustic Routes tells the story of seminal guitarist and singer Bert Jansch, from his early days in Edinburgh, Scotland, to becoming the acoustic guitarist that everyone wanted to be.

As a teenager, in the early 1960’s Bert sat at the feet of Brownie McGhee at the Howff Folk Club in Edinburgh mesmerised by Key to the Highway. Armed with that raw American Blues influence and a bewildering technique, he fashioned sublime interpretations of traditional and blues music on the acoustic guitar. The result was music that had a profound influence on a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Neil Young, and it still inspires todays’ generation of guitarists and singers.

Specially filmed on location at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Oakland California, Santa Monica Hills, The London Troubadour, Bunjies Coffee House (London), The Half Moon in Putney (London), and at The Howff in Edinburgh, Acoustic Routes features original live performances by Bert Jansch, Brownie McGhee, Davey Graham, Anne Briggs, Ralph McTell, Wizz Jones, Martin Carthy, John Renbourn, Hamish Imlach, Archie Fisher, Peter Kirtley, Jacqui McShee, Duck Baker, and Al Stewart. The film is presented by comedian and banjo player Billy Connolly.

Among the many highlights on the film are unique performances of Brownie and Bert playing together in Oakland, along with special collaborations with Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, Albert Lee, Peter Kirtley and Jacqui McShee. The film also contains the only known surviving footage of Jackson C Frank, together with many previously unpublished archive stills.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original production, the film has been digitally re-mastered and extended to include many previously unseen performances - most notably the defining version of Blackwater Side by Anne Briggs and Bert Jansch.
