Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, Anomalisa, 2015

11 Mar 201623 Apr 2016

Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, who penned such singular creations as Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York, the Oscar-nominated Anomalisa has a cast of puppets to tell a story of accidental love. Voiced by David Thewlis, Michael Stone is a motivational author arriving in Cincinnati to address a suitably devotional audience. With a failed marriage and a long-regretted romantic break-up behind him, his ennui is palpable. Until, that is, a chance encounter with an insecure but kindhearted fan (Synecdoche’s Jennifer Jason Leigh) triggers a mutual epiphany. Our protagonists’ emotions are somehow rendered all the more powerfully by the stop-motion animation, while equally remarkable are the skills of Tom Noonan, who voices literally dozens of other characters. The whole enterprise proves to be an idiosyncratically beautiful, life-affirming gem.
