Art Night: East Piazza, Covent Garden: Cecilia Bengolea

2 Jul 2016

Video installation: 5pm – 2am, East Piazza
Performance and dance workshop: 8.40pm – 9.40pm, West Piazza

Dance artist Cecilia Bengolea presents a new video installation in Covent Garden East Piazza using the mirrored facades that currently cover the outside of the marketplace. Multiple projections combine Jamaican dancehall and classical ballet, created with Bengolea's regular collaborators, the dancehall artist Damion Wallace and the ballerina Erika Miyauichi.

Bengolea describes dancehall as the punk brother of reggae, an unruly culture where everything is possible: the new work combines the pop culture and academicism of two extremely different languages and worlds and the social signifiers and cultural contradictions that each brings. As Bengolea states: “Ballet and dancehall are not supposed to meet in one same body”.

Bengolea, Wallace and Miyauichi present a live public performance and participatory workshop at 8.40pm - 9.40pm in the West Piazza of Covent Garden.

Cecilia Bengolea (born 1984, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is based in Paris and works as an artist, dancer and choreographer. Her piece Sylphides, 2009, co-created with François Chaignaud, won the Paris critique choreographique revelation award and the Young Artist Prize at Gwangju Biennale in 2014. She presented critically acclaimed work made in collaboration with Jeremy Deller and Marinella Senatore at the 13th Lyon Biennial in 2015 and she is currently working on an exhibition of dance for Dia:Beacon, Beacon.
