BAFTA Masterclass: Mat Newman

2 Nov 2011

Following on from the successful last series of masterclasses, BAFTA and the ICA are back with a monthly series, where leading creatives are invited to share their experiences and secrets behind their craft. Every month we'll be inviting an expert in their field to talk about their work in a small, intimate environment, illustrated with a number of clips. Our accomplished guests are all currently working in either film, TV or video game making (or all three!) and the classes will focus on a wide range of industry crafts. This is a unique opportunity for the audience to ask those burning questions and to learn the trade from the masters.

Mat Newman started his film career working in the camera department of Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. After hanging around Scorsese's editing rooms and watching Thelma Schoonmaker work, he decided to move into film editing. In 2005 he met director Nicolas Winding Refn, with whom he has since made three theatrical features: Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and Drive. Drive was their first Hollywood production together, and won Refn the Director's Prize at Cannes in 2011. Their next film together, Only God Forgives, shoots with Ryan Gosling in Bangkok.
