CultFilms and ICA present: A Special Day (Una Giornata Particolare) + Introduction

23 Oct 2016

The introduction before the screening will feature Pasquale Iannone.

On this special day in 1938, all of Rome is attending a parade commemorating Adolf Hitler's historic meeting with Italian leader Benito Mussolini. Working-class housewife Antonietta (Sophia Loren), who is left alone to tend to household duties, meets the only other person not attending the parade, Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni), a liberal radio broadcaster. The two forge an unexpectedly close friendship that will change their perceptions of love, politics and life itself. Italian cinema's most iconic screen couple, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, are cast against glamorous type and deliver the finest and most nuanced performances of their career in this rarely seen masterpiece from Ettore Scola.

Pasquale Iannone is a film academic and critic based in Edinburgh. He is a regular contributor to Sight & Sound as well as various BBC Radio programmes. His film curation work includes seasons at BFI Southbank, Glasgow Film Theatre and Edinburgh’s Filmhouse.
