With the death of her mother, Hewan, a poster child for the successful, over-achieving immigrant, thought she was going to be able to finally bury with her the memories of her teenage years in Ethiopia. But the unexpected appearances in Los Angeles of her estranged father and of Ben, the man who tortured her during the Red Terror campaign in the mid 1970s, start unstitching her perfect quilt of a life.
