The Diary of a Teenage Girl

A big Sundance 2015 hit, Marielle Heller’s debut feature is a sensitively sexualised coming-of-age story set in 1970s San Francisco. Bel Powley (A Royal Night Out) plays Minnie, the wide-eyed daughter of coke-snorting hippie Charlotte (comedian Wiig, not entirely playing for laughs).

Minnie embarks on a loopy, forbidden affair with her mother’s goofy boyfriend, Monroe (Skarsgård, What Maisie Knew). An amateur cartoonist, Minnie also chronicles the relationship in her diary, drawing images that appear on screen – echoing Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel, upon which writer-director Heller’s screenplay is based (and which also spawned a 2010 stage version, which Heller both wrote and starred in). The result is an offbeat, highly original confection with uniformly terrific performances, especially from Powley and Skarsgård, who exude infectiously tangible chemistry.
