Rituparno Ghosh. Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish, 2012

In Focus Film Society: Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish

1 Jun 2014

A special commemorative screening for the late Indian filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh of the third of his trilogy on gender identity. Ghosh plays the principal part of choreographer Rudra who plans to stage Tagore’s Chirangada as he undergoes a gender change process.

Ghosh’s own interpretation of Tagore’s classic opera moves from stage to hospital settings, from performance to psycho-analysis, delving into the painful process of artistic creation finally asserting the right to claim one’s own gender.

The film is particularly topical in the light of the Supreme Court of India ruling that grants recognition to third gender/transgender identity.

Presented by In Focus Film Society, a London based film club which offers designed film events and encourages film culture for young audiences.
