FOMO: Helen Hester, FOMO Panel chaired by Hito Steyerl

31 May 2015

This presentation includes imagery depicting sexual violence.

Helen Hester presents [Porno]Graphic: Bracketing the Sexually Explicit in 'War Porn'. This talk explores what ‘war porn’ is and considers how this term gets used, whilst pointing to a range of examples from the sphere of digital culture. Ultimately, Hester suggests that contemporary understandings of the pornographic are changing in a way that not only reflects the heightened visibility of adult entertainment, but which also explodes the meaning of ‘pornography’ itself (raising some potentially discomforting ethical issues in the process).

Helen Hester is Lecturer in Promotional Cultures at Middlesex University, London. Her research interests include technofeminism, sexuality studies, and theories of social reproduction, and she is a member of the international feminist collective Laboria Cuboniks. She is the author of Beyond Explicit: Pornography and the Displacement of Sex (SUNY Press, 2014), the co-editor of the collections Fat Sex: New Directions in Theory and Activism (Ashgate, 2015) and Dea ex Machina (Merve, 2015), and series editor for Ashgate’s Sexualities in Society book series.

The Q&A with Helen Hester is led by Linda Stupart.

These presentations are followed by a panel discussion co-chaired by Hito Steyerl and Nina Power, featuring FOMO participants Helen Hester, Yuri Pattison and McKenzie Wark.

FOMO: Day 3 Panel Discussion
