Having earned Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball) the Best Director award at Cannes in 2014, Foxcatcher is still surrounded by noisy awards buzz as the 2015 Oscar season approaches.

The film tells the true story of brothers Mark and Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo), wrestling champions taken under the wing of multimillionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell). Du Pont invites the pair to join his Team Foxcatcher and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and Mark in particular falls under the spell of his wealth, drive and apparent generosity.

But the deeply strange du Pont becomes increasingly sadistic and controlling, and the trio’s relationship starts to spiral out of control. The almost unrecognisable Carell gives an astonishing, terrifying performance, and Miller’s superb direction draws career-best turns from Tatum and Ruffalo. The result is an extraordinarily powerful psychological thriller.
