Winner of a directing award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed in the Un Certain Regard section, this tense and moving film follows a group of teenagers struggling to cross Guatemala and illegally enter the United States in search of a new life and the ‘golden dream’.
Beautifully acted by a cast of young non-professionals, and striking a delicate balance between youthful energy and hardened cynicism, the film is about as real as world cinema gets, and is also a visual feast that recalls the work of Terrence Malick.
The Golden Dream, dir. Diego Quemada-Díez, Guatemala/Spain/Mexico 2013, 108 mins, cert. 12A. Spanish with English subtitles.
