Troubled young son Jiale (Koh Jia Ler) in particular forms a close bond with the family’s Filipino maid, Terry (Bayani), who has come to Singapore in search of a brighter future.
Beautifully paced, with a strong focus on the intimacies and subtleties of the family unit, Ilo Ilo is a humane, low-key triumph, and announces a distinctive new voice in Asian filmmaking.
