Julieta

21 Aug 20161 Nov 2016

In Almodóvar’s richly seasoned and photographed film, Julieta (Suárez) is the middle-aged mother of Antía, whom she hasn’t seen for 12 years. Just as Julieta is about to leave Madrid for good, a chance meeting reveals that Antía, now a mother of three, is living happily in another country. The discovery prompts a radical change of plan, gradually explained in a series of flashbacks which explore Julieta’s emotional complexity. Julieta as a younger woman is played by Adriana Ugarte, the vignettes she appears in featuring familiar faces from Almodóvar’s loose-knit repertory company, including the wonderful Rossy de Palma (Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown). Adapted by the director from Nobel laureate Alice Munro’s short stories, after the playful excesses of I’m So Excited! this is a return to the dramatic, female-centric form of Volver.
