'[a] vigorous and engrossing debut' - Tim Robey, The Telegraph
'a potent film... about how families nurture dysfunction behind their self-created barricades' - Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
In Umut Dag’s much-garlanded debut feature, sweet-natured Ayse (Akkaya) marries handsome young Hasan (Murathan Muslu) before being whisked away from her Turkish village to an unfamiliar and daunting Vienna, where the marriage is revealed as a sham to dodge immigration controls.
Hasan’s mother Fatma (Koldas) is dying of cancer, and Ayse is being set up to become a second wife, or kuma, to his kindly father (Erincin). The family that Ayse finds herself unexpectedly joining is riven with tension and intrigue, and the ensuing emotional roller coaster is exquisitely constructed.
Working to first-timer Petra Ladinigg’s incisive script, the excellent ensemble cast gradually reveal hidden depths to characters that initially appear unsympathetic and opaque.
