Last Tango in Paris

Screening in conjunction with the Great Directors documentary, Bernardo Bertolucci’s landmark film caused cultural shockwaves comparable, according to critic Pauline Kael, to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Marlon Brando plays a bereaved American man who initiates an anonymous series of clandestine sexual encounters with a young French woman (the late Maria Schneider), an affair that has a profound effect on both of them. The film was co-scripted by Agnes Varda and features Catherine Breillat in its cast, both of whom are interviewed in the Great Directors documentary alongside Bertolucci himself.
