Craig Shwartz (John Cusack) is nearing the end of his rope - his 10 year old marriage to Lotte (Cameron Diaz) is habitual at best. They have no money, no passion, no escape. Craig has a job as an entry-level filing clerk where he meets the beautiful Maxine Lund (Catherine Keener). To him, Maxine is an object just waiting to be loved. For Maxine, however, there's no way.

Dejected, Craig retreats back to his office to file and in a moment of exasperation, he slams the drawer causing some of his index files to fall behind the cabinet. Upon moving it, Craig discovers a portal to the inside of the unique experience that is John Malkovich. This self-mocking fantasy about celebrity and the life of an actor marks the feature film debut of Spike Jonze, from a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman.
