After quietly building a roster of brilliant and understated performances in independent comedies such as Damsels in Distress and Greenberg, Greta Gerwig has finally received wider recognition with her breakout turn in art-house hit Frances Ha, yet she made one of her earliest screen appearances in this low-budget, wry, and refreshingly frank romantic-comedy.
Gerwig (also co-writer) delivers an unguarded performance as a young woman wooed by two of her work colleagues, although she's not sure that either really makes for a suitable boyfriend. Director Joe Swanberg is one of the key figures in the low-budget 'mumblecore' world and this, his third feature, virtually defines the genre with its post-college characters taking their first tentative steps into the adult world of professional and personal commitment.
