The Mexican Suitcase

9 Jun 201312 Jun 2013

The story of three lost boxes known as the Mexican Suitcase containing 4,500 negatives dating from the mid to late 1930s – the work of legendary photojournalists Robert Capa, David 'Chim' Seymour and Gerda Taro. Exiled from their respective countries – Hungary, Poland and Germany – they travelled to Spain together to fight fascism with their cameras. All three photographers met untimely deaths in war zones, adding to the poignancy of this film, which is complemented by an original score by Michael Nyman. Through their images and the memories of survivors of the Spanish Civil War, the exile of 500,000 Spaniards to France and Mexico is told. The film considers how a new generation in Spain is beginning to reconcile itself with its own history, looking at the power of memory and asking how we reclaim our stories and our pasts.
