Composer, conductor and artistic director of Ensemble Exposé, Roger Redgate chairs this discussion on 'new complexity' with British composer and pianist Michael Finnissy, American composer and conductor Aaron Cassidy, Artistic Director of the Elision Ensemble Daryl Buckley and oboist Christopher Redgate, who will also perform.
The term 'new complexity' in music arose in the 1980's much to the chagrin of many of the composers associated with it. It was known for its dense and challenging score writing and for being favoured by left-wing composers wishing to distance themselves from the commercialism and more easily digestible minimalist composers.
