New Terms: Radical Education Workshops: Human Library

29 Nov 2014

Part of a series of participatory and theoretical sessions in the ICA Studio on experimental and radical learning and pedagogy, led by members of the New Terms group.

The New Terms ‘Human Library’ provides an opportunity to share radical education experiences and opinions, by means of private conversations which take place in a safe and comfortable environment.

Individuals identify themselves as human ‘books’ with a specific ‘title’, in order to be ‘read’ by a member of the public. For example, Disgruntled Art Teacher might wish to discuss aspects of their work in the classroom. Disgruntled Student, likewise. These ‘books’ might be members of the group, or other interested participants.

Session facilitated by New Terms member Mark Smith.

This event is initiated by ICA Student Forum member Anna Kontopoulou

This event is part of the New Terms: Radical Education Workshops series on Saturday 29 November as part of Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2014. The full workshop programme includes:

Are you human? Can you think of times when you’ve faced oppression, discrimination or bias? All of us face forms of oppression in our daily lives. What avenues do we have to combat it? One avenue is to talk. To talk openly, honestly and candidly about different forms of oppression and how they affect us.

All ages/genders/sexual orientations/religious beliefs/backgrounds/etc. are invited to participate. If you’re a) human, and b) think you could participate in an informal, one-on‐one chat with an interested workshop-er in a relaxed setting, please contact the New Terms ‘librarian’ via email:
