On the eve of the release of his acclaimed first feature film Silence, a rare opportunity to view earlier films by leading Irish documentary artist Pat Collins. This screening establishes the territory – both topographic and metaphoric – of Silence, as well as revealing a keenly felt and realised portfolio of ‘place works’ in their own terms.

The programme is followed by a Q&A with Pat Collins and composer Susan Stenger, hosted by Gareth Evans (Film Curator, Whitechapel Gallery).

Tim Robinson: Connemara

Artist Cartographer Tim Robinson has been extensively mapping and studying Connemara for the last thirty years. His work has reached international recognition through publications such as Listening to the Wind, The Last Pool of Darkness and his forthcoming A Little Gaelic Kingdom. Tim Robinson: Connemara is a sixty minute film based on the three Connemara books and a visual interpretation of his work as a map-maker and writer. An exploration of landscape, history and mythology, this film acts as an intersection between writing, film-making and the natural world. Soundtrack composed by Susan Stenger.

Pat Collins edited the late, lamented Film West magazine, before programming the Galway Film Fleadh for a couple of memorable seasons, then producing his first remarkable documentary, Michael Hartnett – A Necklace Of Wrens in 1999. In the years since, Collins has been producing consistently stunning docs – over two dozen of them – at a nigh-upon-breathless rate. His eclectic filmography offers portraits of artists ranging from director Abbas Kiarostami to cartographer and author Tim Robinson, psycho-geographical examinations of Tory Island and his beloved Cork, plus experimental mood pieces such as Loch Dearg and the extraordinary Pilgrim (both 2008).

Collins could be described as a cinematic landscape artist of sorts, possessing a deft ability to capture texture, mood, and emotion, along with the confidence to let his films (and their subjects) truly breathe. Viewed together, these idiosyncratic, always fascinating screen-works offer a unique snapshot of Ireland at the turn of the 21st century, with a particular focus on rural living and quiet rebels with a unique way of seeing. - Derek O’Connor

Composer/performer Susan Stenger was born in Buffalo, NY. After intensive flute studies in Prague and New York, she devoted herself to performing music of 20th century composers, such as John Cage, Christian Wolff and Phill Niblock.

She was a founder of acclaimed wall-of-guitar group Band Of Susans and all-bass art band Big Bottom, and has collaborated with an eclectic range of artists, including dancer/choreographer Michael Clark, writers Iain Sinclair and Alan Moore, and scrap-metal percussionist FM Einheit. In 2006 she was commissioned by Forma Arts and MOCA Lyon to make an exhibition-length sound installation, which became the 96-day-long Soundtrack for an Exhibition and explored song form on multiple levels of genre, time and detail.

She was a recipient of the highly competitive 'Women Make Music' award from the UK PRS for Music Foundation for Full Circle, which London's Guardian called 'vertiginous, droning, rushing, discrete, insidious and extremely beautiful'. Full Circle was first presented as a month-long installation during Newcastle's AV Festival 2012 and was subsequently featured in Toronto's all-night city-wide Nuit Blanche Festival.

Stenger was named Best Composer at the 2012 London Underwire Short Film Festival and was recently granted an Appalachian Sound Archive Fellowship for research toward completion of a piece for the Kronos Quartet.
