Prince: An Introduction

14 Dec 2012

Matt Thorne, author of Prince (2012), will kick off the festival by discussing his new biography on the American pop icon together with ICA’s Tom Wilcox. A critical study thoroughly covering his childhood through to his current career, the research of this book will be presented by not only a celebrated British writer but also a true Prince fan. This event will make a great introduction to those who are less familiar with the popular artist and offer a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of Prince for those who are familiar and seek more.

Matt Thorne is Head of Creative Writing at Brunel University, London. He is the author of 6 novels and his work ranges from children’s books to journalism to screenplays and radio dramas. In 2000, he founded ‘The New Puritans’, a literary group advocating simplicity and relevance in contemporary British fiction, for which he also co-wrote the anthology, All Hail The New Puritans (2000). Earlier this year, he published his first non-fictional work, Prince (Faber & Faber 2012), a critical study and thorough biography of the American singer-songwriter.

Tom Wilcox is the Associate Curator at the ICA. Formerly, he has spent several years as the Managing Director of the Whitechapel Gallery, London. Parallel to his career in art administration, Wilcox has worked in the music business throughout the last two decades as a musician, composer, DJ and music curator. Recent artists he has collaborated with are Gillian Glover, Maggi Ronson and Kunsthalle.
