★★★★★ Little White Lies

For more than 15 years, Kathleen Hanna was as good as her word. As frontwoman of the awe-inspiring Bikini Kill, she became a leading light of both the Pacific Northwest scene and the Riot Grrrl movement of the early 1990s, combining powerful lyrics, a blistering vocal style and a take-no-prisoners attitude that still tears up the screen in archive concert footage.

When the band imploded in 1997, Hanna continued in new creative directions. Then all of a sudden, in 2005, the unthinkable happened: she shut up. This thoroughly engrossing doc unravels the reason for her silence, and showcases her latest work. With Riot Grrrl tactics and sensibilities making global headlines today thanks to Pussy Riot, this is a timely tribute to the diamond-hard integrity and unquenchable rage of an essential activist and artist.
