Fresh off the back of last year's Academy Award for Best Picture, Alejandro González Iñárritu delivers The Revenant, an awe-inspiring account of one renowned explorer’s relentless fight for survival after his expedition into unknown territory takes a disastrous turn. Raw and powerful cinematography complements the epic nature of this tale, where Leonardo DiCaprio battles unrelenting forces of nature alongside top talents of British cinema, including Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson.

Inspired by true events and based partly on Michael Punke’s novel of the same name, The Revenant dives into basic human drives as they rise to meet immense forces of nature. Iñárritu himself affirms the project’s relationship to the most essential masterworks of European art cinema; consultation with Werner Herzog provoked a desire to scout for real locations that recall Herzog’s own methods, while Iñárritu connects the scale of his tale to Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev and the narrative dynamics perfected by Akira Kurosawa. Emerging from this dialect of cinematic language, The Revenant is rooted within a tradition of arthouse filmmaking that confirms Iñárritu’s place as one of the medium’s greatest talents.
