In what he claims will be his last ever film, maverick director Soderbergh casts two of his regular stars, Law and Zeta-Jones, as rival psychiatrists treating Emily, a troubled young woman (Mara, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). Emily’s reliance on prescription drugs has devastating consequences for all concerned, especially her ex-prisoner husband (Tatum). As with Contagion, Soderbergh employs a Scott Z. Burns script to interweave various subplots, all underscored by a nagging concern that Big Pharma is the real villain of the piece. Mara gives a magnetic, career-defining performance as a sometime medicated zombie who in reality is anything but, and Law and Zeta-Jones are also fantastic in roles that lead us to conclusions that are subsequently shattered. If this really is Soderbergh’s swansong, he’s leaving on a massive high.
