Previously at the ICA - Events
6 Nov 2010
Featuring a not-to-be-missed evening of collaborative and immersive sounds, the ICA and Upset The Rhythm present this very special evening. Headlining are Soft Circle - a duo comprised of guitarist Ben Vida and illustrator, drummer and one-time Black Dice/Lightning Bolt member Hisham Bharoocha. At once both energetic and ambient, Soft Circle’s music indicates influences as diverse as Neu!, Steve Reich and Philip Glass with an up-tempo dancemusic bias. With a new album due in November this is a rare opportunity to experience their stunning take on music from a percussive perspective. Joining Soft Circle on stage will be Boredoms founder and frontman EYE whose pioneering output under numerous guises has made a hugely significant impact on the development of contemporary music. Fresh from an Australian tour of the Boredoms multiple drum project 9Boadrum, EYE and Hisham - who doubles as artistic director for the Boadrum projects – are set to present something fitting and very special for the midpoint of the Rhythm Section weekender.
Elsewhere on the bill are up and coming London outfit Nedry plus LA’s Baths on his first trip to the UK. Fresh from supporting Scotch Egg’s twin-drum outfit Drum Eyes and soon to tour with 65 Days of Static, Nedry’s mix of dubstep, electronica and lo-fi experimental endeavors have impressed many this year. The trio of Matt Parker, Chris Amblin and Ayu Okakita explore “obsessive ideas of how electronic and analogue instrumentation could collide, fuse and synergize within a live setting” and came together in 2008 after a year of idea-sharing over the internet. Anticon’s Baths is the latest break-out act from one of the world’s most forward-thinking record labels – the project of Will Wiesenfeld is inspired by the energy of the LA's burgeoning beat/glitch scene (Daedelus is a close friend). Grafting acoustic musicianship and field recording onto propulsive beats to warm, rhythmic effect. Will’s work is closer to contemporaries like Toro Y Moi creating a sound packed with bright moments and prone to unexpected turns. Last but not least Upset The Rhythm will furnish the evening with DJ sounds as only they know how.
