On 12 September at 8:45, ICA Associate Curator of Artists’ Film and Moving Image Steven Cairns hosts a Q&A with A Spell to Ward off the Darkness co-directors Ben Rivers and Ben Russell
In search of spiritual experience in a secular world, New York musician Robert A. A. Lowe (Lichens/Om) leads us through a trio of diverse and culturally extreme social scenarios directed by experimental filmmakers Ben Russell and Ben Rivers (Two Years at Sea).
Lowe first appears in a small Estonian commune, unfazed by the members’ nudity as they engage in earnest post-sauna discussion. A burning log cabin closes the second section, its fiery disintegration as mesmerising as the lengthy opening shot featuring a Finnish lake at dusk, which precedes Lowe’s performance with a black-metal band.
Meticulously composed and shot using 16mm cameras, this film is a transcendental visual poem which will impress those weary of formulaic filmmaking.
