When We Leave + Q&A

27 Mar 2011

No longer able to stand her husband's ill-treatment, Umay flees from Istanbul with her five-year-old son Cem to seek shelter in the arms of her family in Berlin. But as the reality of Umay's defiant actions sets in, the family's reputation within the Turkish community at home and abroad is threatened. Umay’s family is trapped in their conventions, torn between their love for her and the traditional values of their community. When her family decides to return Cem to his father in Turkey, Umay is forced to move again to save her son. She finds the inner strength to build a new life, but her need for her family's love drives her to a series of ill-fated attempts at reconciliation. Umay doesn't realize how dangerous her struggle for self-determination has become. Standout performances led by award-winning actress Sibel Kekilli (lead in Fatih Akin's acclaimed Head-On) deliver nuance to a situation that teeters between hope and heartbreak. Best European Film Panorama Section, Berlinale 2010.
