Lisa Aschan’s assured feature debut is a feisty coming-of-age drama centred on two teenage girls locked in a bitter power struggle. Emma (Mathilda Paradeiser) meets Cassandra (Linda Molin) while trying out for a local equestrian vaulting team, and the pair quickly becomes engaged in a high-stakes game of one-upmanship. Both girls derive pleasure from pain, lending this psychological and psychical tussle an added layer of complexity. With traces of Céline Sciamma (Tomboy) and Julia Leigh (Sleeping Beauty), She Monkeys is a poignant and powerful exploration of adolescence from a gifted young director with a firm grasp on the visual language of cinema.
